Talk About Bullying ISBN: 9780750246170
Bingham, Jane
Published by Wayland (Talk About series), 2008
This information book begins by explaining what bullying is, including cyberbullying, taunting, freezing people out, taking possessions, and physical violence. It goes on to talk about the feelings of the bullied: fear, depression, anger, low self-esteem, which can result in self-harm or even suicide. A further chapter explains who gets bullied: for racist reasons, because of weight, homophobia, disabilities, or just because the one who bullies wants to. In the chapter on why people bully, we see that people learn to bully just like they learn other things, from being bullied at home or from being in gangs. 'Beating Bullying' gives advice on what to do if one is bullied: get help from someone you trust; keep a diary of dates, times and incidents; use helplines and websites; stay with other people so the bulliers can't get to you; use positive body language; and keep your temper. There is good information about stopping cyberbullies as well as about schools and bullying policies. Mediation is talked about, and there is a short section on bullying in society. 'Talk About' boxes give discussion ideas, and case studies provide interest. The usual index, glossary, and lists of books to read and websites and helplines to use make the book useful for both schools and individuals.
