Draglins and the Bully ISBN: 9781843627005
Fisher, Chris and French, Vivian
Published by Orchard Books, 2007
One in a series of books about very small creatures called draglins who live under floors and underground. The four small draglins, Daffodil, Dora, Dennis, and Danny, are told by their Aunt Plum that they must go to school. Daffodil, the feisty one, objects strenuously, but the other three are willing to give it a go. School turns out to be quite an adventure, what with a large rabbit appearing on the school playground (the playground is part of an old rabbit burrow). But the worst of school is Peg, the class bully. She and Daffodil hate each other on sight, and at the end of the day when Peg decides to intimidate the draglins on their way home, it is Daffodil and Dennis who (along with the reappearance of the rabbit and a quantity of clay mud) bring down the bully - who turns out to be scared of her mother and very grateful for new friends. The draglin series is great fun - a world of its own - and the fact that the little draglins solve their own bully problem, albeit in a remarkable way, makes for good discussion. A short, beginning reader from the 'Super Crunchies' series with lots of excellent black and white illustrations.
