Deron Goes to Nursery School (First Experiences) ISBN: 9781845078645
Onyefulu, Ifeoma
Published by Frances Lincoln Children's Books, 2010
This is a first day at nursery with a difference: the school is in Ghana, and all the children are black. We see Deron and his mum and little sister getting Deron ready for his first day. They buy a bag and shoes and some material to make a shirt and shorts in the market, and then mum makes the clothes at home on her state-of-the-art sewing machine. Photographs show us the school, Deron looking smart in his new clothes, and all the activities of the children. They play outside, sing and dance, do a little writing, and play games before lunch and a rest on pallets on the floor. Then there is a story before home time. It's a tiring day, but Deron looks forward to returning tomorrow. While many of the nursery activities will be familiar to British children, the different environment will be of real interest, and the photographs show us a lot about life in Ghana. A lovely book.
