Flying to See Janet: A Fun Guide to the Airport Experience ISBN: 9781849059138
Vickers, Laura and Wargelin, Peggy
Published by Jessica Kingsley Pub, 2012
Children can be fearful of flying, and this book will go a long way towards allaying those fears. Intended for a child with Asperger's Syndrome and severe anxiety - the real Janet - it is fully as useful for any child showing signs of being afraid to fly. Rather like a book for preparing a child for hospital, this one will prepare a child for the aeroplane experience. The story takes place in the United States, so the flight described is from Atlanta to Boston, but the experiences are the same everywhere. Janet's Aunt Laura and Uncle Mark fly from their home in Georgia to visit Janet and her family in Massachusetts, and Janet wants to know all about their flight. Aunt Laura explains the whole experience in great detail, and the bright pictures, full of geometric shapes and speech bubbles are great fun. Several pages of suggestions for ,parents at the end cover all sorts of issues particularly affecting children with disabilities. This is a super resource for children and their families, disabled or not. Available from Amazon, from bookshops, or from the publisher at www.jkp.com.
