The Buttons Family: Going to the Dentist ISBN: 9781406328592
French, Vivian and Heap, Sue
Published by Walker Childrens Paperbacks, 2012
When mum announces that dad, Charlie, Cherry and Baby Lou have all been booked into the dentist for check-ups, everyone is pleased except dad. He has a sore tooth and 'hates' going to the dentist. Off they go, and the whole family is called in to see Mr Ali at one time. Baby Lou climbs into the chair first so Mr Ali can count her teeth and check them. Mr Ali then gives Cherry and Charlie disclosing solution and Charlie must brush his teeth to see if he can get rid of the plaque that has built up. Cherry has a tiny hole in a tooth, but it won't need a filling because her tooth will come out soon and she will grow a new one. Dad has to have a filling, and later at home Charlie promises he will show dad how to brush properly. This is a nicely paced story about a family having a dental appointment. It shows some of the equipment and emphasizes the friendliness of people in the surgery. The pictures are simple with plain backgrounds, and all the stress is on the people. There are stickers in the back of the book which will be fun to use.
