Kipper is really looking forward to going to the zoo with his class, particularly to see the tigers, but when he begins to sneeze and feel seriously unwell, Miss Green decides he should go home. Mum takes him to the nurse at the Health Centre, who recommends lots of drinks. By this time Kipper's ear is hurting too, so the nurse says to bring him back if the earache gets any worse. When it does get worse in the night, and there is 'stuff coming out of it', a visit to the doctor is the answer. Dr Spooner is very kind and diagnoses an ear infection, which means he must stay home and take his medicine until he is better. Kipper is not happy about missing the zoo trip, but gradually he recovers, and on the next Sunday, his parents take the whole family to the zoo so that he can see the tigers. This simple little story is a good introduction to being ill and the importance of seeing a doctor. Children will enjoy the story and also the pictures of items a doctor uses at the end of the book. Information in a story form is always good for the youngest child.
