The Growing Up Book for Boys: What Boys on the Autism Spectrum Need to Know! ISBN: 9781849055758
Hartman, Davida and Suggs, Margaret Anne
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers Ltd, 2015
This well-illustrated book for boys approaching puberty gives lots of information on all the specific things having to do with growing up. Aimed at young people on the autistic spectrum, including those with Asperger's syndrome, it explains in detail and in simple language all the things one needs to know. It could also be useful to those not on the spectrum, particularly as it answers lots of questions on things that other books often don't go into. The approach is visual, both in the excellent illustrations, one to each page, and in the spacing of the simple sentences, thus making the information easier to cope with and remember. Sections on the body in general, the hair, the penis and the changes puberty brings about, hygiene and the importance of showering daily, the skin, clothes and how to keep them clean, emotions, including crushes and how to handle them, friends and the fact that friendships can change, the internet and how to keep safe when using it, and the importance of learning the difference between good touching and bad and how to say 'no' to someone who may have gone beyond the boundaries. I particularly liked the section on girls and how they go through puberty too. There are several pages of information for parents and carers at the end of the book and a short list of further reading. Altogether, this makes a readable and interesting book for boys, who will find the information invaluable during these turbulent growing up years. Available from Amazon, from good book shops, or from the publishers at www.jkp.com.
