Isaac and His Amazing Asperger Superpowers! ISBN: 9781406344455
Walsh, Melanie
Published by Walker Books Ltd, 2016
This splendid picture book should be in every class where there is a child with Asperger Syndrome. Isaac has 'special powers'. He can remember lots of facts, even though sometimes his friends don't like hearing quite so many of them. He has lots of energy and enjoys his trampoline; he loves his pets because they seem to understand him best; he's allowed to fidget in class because his teacher knows he concentrates better that way; and he doesn't really understand jokes and must have them explained. Strange noises really hurt his ears, and when he looks at people, he looks at their foreheads because looking straight into their eyes is scary. He's super-good at seeing things others miss. He knows that he doesn't really have super-powers, although he and his brother like to play superheroes, but his 'differences' are because he has Asperger's ('it rhymes with hamburgers'). He explains that you can't catch it, but 'it just means my brain works a little differently.' The superb pictures, full of life, have an interesting flatness to them, rather like paper dolls, or cut-outs, pasted to the page. They are simple and colourful with great appeal. Children who read this story will have a new understanding of those in their class whose brains may 'work a little differently'.
