I Know Someone with Dyslexia (Young Explorer: Understanding Health Issues) ISBN: 9781406220780
Barraclough, Sue
Published by Raintree, 2011
One of a series of books on health and disability problems for KS 1&2, this one explains the problems faced by people with dyslexia. The main theme being one of friendship, there is much emphasis on how one can be sensitive and caring to a friend with the condition. We learn about what dyslexia is, about what causes it, the symptoms, and the fact that reading and writing are actually quite difficult to learn and that 'someone with dyslexia may find it very hard to understand how letters and words work'. Various methods of helping are explained, and the fact that early intervention in school is best, is emphasized. Each person must find his or her own way of coping, and that can cover such things as using tinted glasses, sitting at the front of the class, using computers, or having one-to-one help. Good friends can help by understanding that someone with dyslexia may be slow in answering, or have difficulty understanding questions. A good friend will also make sure that unkind things are not said about their friend's dyslexia. Much is made of the strengths of people with dyslexia; often they are creative and imaginative and good at solving things. Some may be good at music or art too. There are lots of famous people, both past and present, who have had the condition and who have done well in spite of it. A list and some pictures are included. Some true and false facts about dyslexia are interesting, and the book as a whole with it's glossary, index and list of books and websites will be useful for project work. Also good at home for helping younger children understand exactly what dyslexia is. Large print and good photos help the information along.
