Cyber-bullying is a hot topic these days and rightly so. In this book, an easy-read for newly-confident readers, we meet three girls who are best friends. There is Daisy who likes to help others, particularly younger children, Phoebe who likes craft and reading and peace, and Erika who is sporty and has parents who sometimes expect too much of her. The three girls are close, but when Erika starts behaving strangely, Daisy and Phoebe are concerned. It soon develops that Erika is getting horrid text messages on her phone. These are threats that she must lose the Three Shires Cross Country race which she is almost sure to win; they are badly spelled and quite scary. When the texts begin to threaten kidnapping Erika's beloved dog Rolly and Erika won't let them tell the police, Daisy and Phoebe take things into their own hands and become sleuths. This has become blackmail as well as cyber-bullying. The rest of the short novel is all about how the girls solve the mystery and rescue Rolly, who really does get dog-napped. It's a good story, divided up into chapters day by day, and it is told by each girl in turn. There's lots of texting (even though the girls have been told that their mobiles are for emergency use only) and the black and white illustrations add to the adventure. A good story with a moral that is not too evident which would spoil the fun.
