Head, Honor
Published by Franklin Watts Ltd, 2014
This is at the top of the range so far as our age limits go, but the language is easy to understand, and while the pictures are mostly of teenagers, there is plenty of information here for younger children to get lots out of. Covering cyberbullying, assertiveness, bullying at school, at home, and on the street, gangs good and bad and violence in the bad ones, peer pressure, the necessity of supporting those who are bullied, the dangers of being a bystander, and the necessity of self-belief. The information is punchy and forthright, and there are lots of boxes of questions and answers and others of personal experience. The different kinds of and reasons for bullying are explained and the necessity of finding a trusted person to talk to about it is emphasised. There is a section on school policies and what to do if the policy doesn't seem to be working. Most of all, it is made clear that the person being bullied is never at fault. A glossary, an index, and a comprehensive list of websites and helplines make the book good for schools, as well as for those suffering the horrors of being bullied.
