Five young brothers in one family know there is a new baby coming, and they are all convinced the baby will be a boy! Each of the brothers has a very special interest, and they each believe that the baby will share that interest and be just like him. One of them wants to be an explorer, the second is very scientifically inclined, the third is artistic, the fourth is determined to be a pirate, and the fifth just wants to be a dreamer. Rather to their horror, the baby turns out to be a girl, and they learn that she may be like them in some ways, but that she will always be 'just like herself''. Individuality is the theme here, and the boys also come to learn that they themselves are very individual in their interests and outlook. The pictures are great, full of wonderful, busy collages, and the artist gives some creative ideas at the end of the book such as, making a 'welcome home' sign for the new baby. This is an unusual approach to having a new baby in the family and should give lots of room for discussion about what the baby will be like.
