Don’t Go There! ISBN: 9781783447152

When the little girl finds a small and very lovable baby Martian in the garden, she takes him into her house a mistake, because he isn’t toilet trained! He finds all sorts of remarkable places to ‘go’, but when the little girl shows him the toilet, he’s frightened: “’Too cold and hard and deep!’ he cried. ‘Too weird and wet for me!’ And he ran off down the stairs to find another place to wee.’ A cowboy hat, the goldfish bowl, and the litter bin are all tried, with disasterous results, so then the little girl must show him herself how to use the toilet. This she does, using the ‘toilet song’, and this is finally successful. While we don’t have any music for the song, parents and children will enjoy making up their own music for it and repeating it over and over again. This could well be a really good way of helping reluctant children to use the toilet as it should be used, and the wonderfully warm and humorous illustrations are a joy. Willis’s poetry is always a joy too, and this approach to helping children use the loo should work a treat!
