Tell me again what happens ISBN: 9781900339049
Mackenzie-Smith, Mark and Mitchell, Fiona
Published by PARC (Paediatric AIDS Resource Centre), 1997
Available from: PARC Edinburgh, 20 Sylvan Place, Edinburgh EH9 1UW This is the fourth in a set of booklets about Lucy and her mum. (The other three will be found in the 'Parental illness' section.) Lucy's mum is very ill and has been in hospital a long time. Lucy is frightened and worried. She likes to think about the happy times when mum was well and would often say, 'I'll always love you, Lucy'. Auntie Susan must tell Lucy that mum is going to die. Lucy asks what happens when someone dies, and Auntie Susan explains directly but in gentle terms. When mum dies, Lucy and her aunt go to see her in hospital and they cry and comfort each other. Lucy goes to the funeral, taking special flowers for mum. She knows that she will have a home in Auntie Susan's family now, and she also has the book that her mum made for her about their life together. Though intended for use with children whose parents have AIDS, the booklet is equally relevant to any child with a terminally ill parent. The story is sensitive and loving with lively cartoon-style pictures, and there are blank pages interspersed for the child to write or draw his or her own feelings. To be used with a trusted adult.
