Grandad's prayers of the earth ISBN: 9780744556483
Lynch, P.J. and Wood, Douglas
Published by Walker, 1999

A beautiful, beautiful book! Told in the first person, the little boy and his grandad often take walks together, and on one of these walks he asks grandad about prayers. Grandad, who loves all of nature, explains prayer by saying that trees and rocks and water and wind and everything prays in its own way, by doing whatever it does best. People, too, pray in all sorts of ways - by painting a picture or by making music - and in words too. When the little boy asks if prayers are answered, grandad says, 'we pray because we are here - not to change the world, but to change ourselves'. The little boy takes all this in, but when grandad goes away and doesn't come back, he cannot pray anymore. It is only when he is older and out on a walk by himself that he understands what grandad meant and is able to pray again. A very special book.
