My friend has dyspraxia ISBN: 9781844580965
Edwards, Nicola
Published by Chrysalis Children's Books (My Friend series), 2004
Mark is Jamie's friend, and he seems to understand Jamie's dyspraxia very well. He helps him remember things like homework at school, and they enjoy drama club together. Jamie's story is one of difficulties with writing, with maths, with physical activity, and with remembering things, and until he is diagnosed, with teasing and bullying too. Crucially, Jamie's diagnosis comes with the assurance that he is clever, and this helps his self-esteem hugely. We meet several therapists who help Jamie, and there is a clear explanation of what is known about dyspraxia. Fact boxes add to the information, and there is an index, a glossary, and a list of organisations and websites - interestingly, one of these is a personal site by a teenager with dyspraxia: www.matts-hideout.co.uk. An excellent and reassuring production.
