Brotherly feelings - Me, my emotions and my brother with Asperger's syndrome ISBN: 9781843108504
Dittrich, Dennis, Frender, Sam and Schiffmiller, Robin
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publications, 2007
Sam (8) and his mum Robin wrote this book because Sam has a 13 year old brother Eric with Asperger's Syndrome, and Sam's feelings about Eric are very mixed indeed - as with most siblings. The book is basically a list of Sam's emotions, how Eric affects them, and how he copes. These are accompanied by wonderfully comic black and white sketches. Some of the feelings are general ones - anger, fear, worry, etc. But Sam also feels 'invaded', 'babied', 'unimpresssive', and 'suspicious'. The feelings chapter is followed by a section on 'What I do when I can't take it anymore'. Sometimes he admits to going into meltdown, or having to get away. But he has also learned to talk about or write down the problems, and he reminds himself there are good times and that he loves Eric very much. He also makes a good attempt to look at things from Eric's point of view. This will be remarkably useful for children with AS siblings and will help bring out problems that may have lain dormant.
